At issue is the automatic transmission’s parking lock. Documentation from BMW indicates that surface machining of the transmission housing by the supplier was not to specification. As a result, increased friction can occur between the transmission housing and the parking lock pawl. Should this happen, the transmission parking lock could exhibit sporadic non-engagement, even if the “P” position has been selected by the driver and displays. After parking, vehicle rollaway could occur if the driver does not also engage the parking brake.

The company said that they were notified by the supplier of a possible component manufacturing error on December 23, 2011. BMW issued a delivery stop and determined that three vehicles had been shipped to dealers and three had been delivered to customers. The company said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will replace the automatic transmission free of charge. The BMW safety recall is expected to begin during January 2012.
