2014 BMW M3 Specs and Review

As a sixth generation, 2014 BMW M3 style does tend to clean the lines on the E90, the next M3 series will likely be treated equally when it finally reaches our shores in 2014. Although there will be a lot of M3 news to come, if the final product turns out much like the picture, we should not be surprised. Let us wait for the presence of the 2014 BMW M3.

2014 BMW M3 – For several weeks, the BMW M3 for the year 2014 has been leaked in cyberspace, and the sport sedan is indeed present as we want, more aggressive and sporty! M3 for the future is to take the basis of the M3 F30, and it’s about what you dreamed of. With the larger airways in the front fascia, to provide fresh air to the intercooler setup for a twin-turbo V6, Chin M3 is more aggressive, but still a tendency marque for subtlety. Around the back.

That kind of thinking could make the upcoming 2014 BMW M3 yet another ground-breaking new vehicle when it arrives in about two years. Although initial rumors pointed to the possibility of an inline-6 boosted by a trio of turbochargers, there's another, even more radical change in the works — a V6.

2014 BMW M3 Engine Specs
Yes, a highly advanced 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is being developed, according to a BMW insider. The rejection of an inline-6, it's claimed, is for reasons of packaging. The new V6 will be the first to mount its two twin-scroll turbochargers within the vee-angle, mirroring the company's 4.4-liter V8 design. This unique-to-BMW approach reduces the length of the inlet tract compared with a regular turbo-vee setup, helping to sharpen throttle response and minimizing heat buildup after air passes through the intercooler.

The V6 apparently won't be simply a cut-down version of the BMW V8, even though history records the M3's 4.0-liter V8 as a chopped version of the old M5 V10, with an identical bore and stroke. A two-cylinder cut of the 4,395cc V8 results in a 3,270cc capacity, yet our insider insists that a 3.0-liter capacity is most likely.

In theory, a 60-degree vee offers the best primary balance for a six; however, a 90-degree angle is required for the two turbos to fit. BMW must then solve the imbalance issue by using either balance shafts or a unique firing order, as it did with the 90-degree V10 in the E60 M5. Outputs of the unique-to-M3 engine are believed to be around 429 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque: sufficient to fend off the Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 AMG. Improved direct injection, extra boost and a higher compression ratio will all contribute to the advantage the V6 will have over the BMW 1M's 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-6.

So while the new twin-turbo V6 does seem the likely power source for the new M3, it also signals the end of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine for the car, a format synonymous with the badge over the past 26 years.

Shaving Pounds Where They Count
The next M3 will also be larger, yet lighter than the outgoing generation. Although the new F30 3 Series sedan is 3.7 inches longer than the E90, on average the range weighs 88 pounds less, thanks to alloy chassis components and increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel throughout the body. Further weight-loss strategies will be employed in the M3, with the M3 CRT concept previewing the advances.

Lightweight design components include a carbon honeycomb hood weighing around 6.6 pounds, titanium mufflers and carbon composite panels and seat parts. Aluminum wiring for the car's electronics replaces heavier copper, saving another 15-20 pounds overall.

BMW is reportedly working on carbon-ceramic discs and aluminum calipers — saving 33 pounds on each corner — but this expensive tech will likely be introduced late in the car's life cycle. Expect the M3 to tip the scales close to 3,483 pounds, which would be about 75 pounds less than the current coupe. Electric power steering — not fitted to the new M5 — is a possibility for the new M3, while a six-speed manual will continue alongside a revised seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The Internal Word
For the first time, the M3 will get a unique code name, tipped to be F80 for the sedan and F82 for the coupe and convertible. Also for the first time, the M3 four-door sedan will launch before the two-door body styles. Debate continues inside Munich over the possibility of renaming the 3 Series coupe and convertible as the 4 Series; however, a name change to M4 is something the M division is apparently actively against.

When the M3/M4 debuts in early 2014, it will need to comply with Euro 6 emissions standards and substantially undercut both the E92's 11.9L/100km and 1M's 9.6L/100km consumption ratings, while achieving a low-4-second 0-60-mph time. That's the new-age performance-car balancing act facing the M division engineers — more power and reduced emissions, all while maintaining crisp throttle response and high rev-ability. It's not easy, but when you are free to use any means possible, it sure makes things easier.

On a vehicle like this, a powerful display of strength is everything. The sculpted front of the BMW M3 Convertible makes no secret of the tremendous power that lies in wait beneath the bonnet. While classic M styling, such as the M gills and chrome-plated steel twin exhaust pipes, helps underline its dynamic presence and elegance. Only the interplay of these measures ensures the desired effect: sports car performance that is ideally suited to everyday driving.

The light reflects off the fine-wood interior trim with sycamore mirror-matched grain anthracite and the M steering wheel with red-blue decorative stitching. The optional trademark dual M circular dials, the M design iDrive Controller, the ergonomically optimised M seat with memory function patiently await the arrival of the driver.

All these features in the BMW M3 Convertible combine to create an ambience that is designed to make drivers feel good - and inspired to take control under the open skies.

Thanks to intelligent aerodynamics, the BMW M3 Convertible not only slices effortlessly through the air, but also channels it to where it's needed most. The intake hole next to the powerdome feeds air directly to the V8 high-rev engine.

The side vents in the front apron help to cool the engine and transmission oil. And the aerodynamic wing mirrors and rear diffuser both contribute to the car's exhilarating dynamics.

Enjoy the freedom of open-top driving in an instant. The retractable hardtop disappears in just 22 seconds, leaving you free to feel the sun on your skin along each sporting curve and open straight. Even a cloudy sky can't spoil your driving pleasure.

The roof simply closes again as swiftly as it opened, quickly emphasising the vehicle's unmistakably athletic aura. After all, the BMW M3 Convertible just demands to be set in motion - whatever the weather.

BMW M3 DTM Concept Car

This is BMW’s M3 DTM Concept Car, a taster of the near-500bhp racer that will compete in the 2012 DTM (German Touring Car) series. Unveiled at BMW Welt in Munich, it signals BMW's return to the DTM after a two-decade absence; between 1987 and 1992, the BMW M3 won 40 races and had over 150 podium finishes in Germany's premier tin-top series.
Does this new BMW M3 DTM car bear any resemblance to a road-going M3?

Not really, although the new 2012 DTM regulations demand that all cars must use a certain number of standard parts – it’s one of the reasons BMW has re-entered the series. The M3 DTM concept features a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic monocoque (CFRP) with a steel roll cage, a six-speed sequential gearbox, and as per DTM regulations, a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8. With air restrictors in place, the eight-cylinder engine produces around 480bhp, and BMW reckons its new M3 racer will hit 62mph in around three seconds and top 186mph.

BMW Motorsport also claims it has been able to ‘call upon the immense technical resources of the BMW Group and apply their innovation to establish performance advantages over their rivals in areas such as engine and aerodynamics’. Massive rear wing notwithstanding, the DTM-spec M3 is 160mm longer than the road car (at 4775mm), those ridiculously blistered wheelarches up the width from 1804mm to 1950mm, and depending on the ride height set-up at each circuit, it’s a mere 1200mm tall (1424mm for the street legal car).

Don’t get too used to the style of this M3 though: the racer only rolled out onto the track for the first time two weeks ago so the team reckons the looks will change significantly between now and the start of the 2012 season.
Anything else?

Besides unveiling the car, BMW also confirmed a few more details of its DTM project. We already know that three teams will race M3s in next year’s DTM series: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG. And now Brit and ex-WTCC champion Andy Priaulx, along with fellow BMW M3 GT driver Augusto Farfus, have been revealed as the first two drivers.

‘It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,’ said BMW’s director of development Dr Klaus Draeger. ‘Next yea, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge.’

‘Getting a new racing programme up and running is a bit like doing a jigsaw,’ added new BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt. ‘New pieces are added almost every day, and we must put them together to create the big picture. The BMW M3 DTM Concept Car is an important milestone on our route to the start of the 2012 season. The rollout of the car was successful, and we are now starting our test programme out on the track. The pieces are fitting together perfectly, so we can definitely say: our preparations for the 2012 season are going according to plan.

BMW GTR M3 And BMW M3 Wallpaper

The E36 M3 GTR BMW is the road-going version of the competition machine built to compete in the 1994 ADAC German GT Cup Touring Car series. Essentially a race car with license plates, it features a stripped out interior and lightweight body panels (dropping the curb weight to 1300 kg), fender flares to accommodate the 18-inch wheels and tires, adjustable front and rear spoilers, a full roll cage and a 300-hp version of the S50 B30 engine. Only two street-legal examples were built

BMW GTR M3
An E46 GTR came to life on February 2001, powered by the P60B40 a 3,997 cc V8 producing 493 hp (368 kW; 500 PS). Unlike the straight-six powered M3 versions, which were outpaced by the Porsche 996 GT3, the racing version of the E46 M3 GTR BMW16 was very successful in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), entered by Schnitzer Motorsport.

Rivals such as Porsche pointed out that this car was more of a prototype as no V8 engine was available in the road-going BMW E46, which is in violation of the spirit of Gran Turismo. In 2001, ALMS regulations stated that cars must be for sale on two continents within twelve months of the rules being issued. To fulfill this rule, BMW put 10 road going GTRs on sale after the 2001 season, for 250,000 euros (then $218,000) each.

The ALMS rules were altered for 2002 to state that 100 cars and 1,000 engines must be built for the car to qualify without penalties. Although BMW could have raced the V8 with the new weight and power penalties under these new regulations, they chose to pull out of the ALMS, effectively ending the short-lived BMW M3 GTR's career.

Two Schnitzer Motorsport GTR cars saw a comeback in 2003 at the 24 Hours Nürburgring, winning 1–2 in 2004 and 2005, as well as entries in the 24 Hours Spa. Onboard coverage recorded in 2004 Hans-Joachim Stuck, Pedro Lamy, Jörg Müller and Dirk Müller on the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

Private teams (Scheid, Getrag, etc.) also have fit 3,997 cc BMW V8 engines into the E46 body to race on the Nürburgring, winning some VLN races in the last years.
