BMW 318d Review, Engine Specifications and Price

One more BMW 3 series car collections is BMW 318d. This is the BMW 318d SE auto. The launch of the facelifted BMW 3-series marks the first time that the 141bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine is available with an automatic gearbox.

This SE edition does not have iDrive, so the facelift changes are restricted to the outside of the car, with minor modifications to the rear lights, bonnet and bootlid. With a starting price of $56,400, the new BMW 318d becomes the new entry model in the all-new BMW 3 Series range. It replaces the BMW 320i as the most affordable 3 Series, though that model also returns.

The BMW 318d is priced a good $4000 cheaper than the entry C-Class diesel, the C200 CDI, and brings with it the latest in diesel engine technology, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and fuel consumption that’s superior by nearly a full litre (4.5L/100km v 5.4L/100km).

Although the 318d uses essentially the same engine as the 320d, the difference in tune (and a few components) results in 105kW of power (compared with 135kW) and 320Nm of torque (compared with 380Nm).

On city roads the difference is hard to notice but when it comes to merging on the highway or performing an overtaking manoeuvre, it’s easy to feel the difference. Put the two side by side and the 318d will take an additional 1.7 seconds to go from 0-100km/h (9.3 seconds).
Behind the wheel the 318d embodies the essence of what the new BMW 3 Series range offers: a dynamic and sporty drive. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic (standard), the 2.0-litre diesel works coherently in delivering all its torque and power and hardly feels over-laboured in the task. There’s that feel that more torque would be welcomed (which is where the 320d comes in), but overall it’s more than capable of performing everyday tasks.

The BMW 318d is available in four grades: Standard, Modern Line ($3900), Sport ($4900) and Luxury ($4900).

New BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon Specs and Price

The wagon is not dead! BMW has announced that it will indeed be bringing its new, 2013 BMW 3 Series Sport Wagon to America. As for powertrains, the base 2013 3 Series wagon for the U.S. should be available with BMW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four that outputs 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque in the sedan. The much lauded N55 3.0-liter turbo-six with 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft in the 335i sedan should also power wagon version. Transmission options will continue to be the six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic.

BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon Specs

The new car is larger than the current model, and boasts 10 percent more cargo volume according to BMW. As with the 3 Series sedan, the wagon will be available in Sport, Luxury, and Modern lines, as well as an M Sport Line, each with a unique approach to their interior and exterior trim.

Inside, the back seats have a 40:20:40 split and the cargo space offers plenty of room (as you can see in the photos). There's also hidden storage, a standard partition net, and if the cargo cover isn't in use, it can be stowed under the cargo floor for added convenience.

Amenities include an available power tailgate that, with the optional Comfort Access package, becomes a hands-free power tailgate; you just wave your foot under the bumper à la 2013 Ford Escape. Naturally, BMW will offer its full complement of tech and driver aids, like BMW Apps, a color HUD, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, BMW Parking Assistant, Rear-view Camera with Top View, and the BMW Assist telematics service.

2012 BMW 328i gets rating of 23/33 mpg city/highway

Like all new BMWs, the latest 328i is not exactly all new. Such is the planning in Munich that the 3 Series shares parts with other family members, both lesser and greater. The front suspension, the front bulkhead, the central floorpan, the electrical systems, the iDrive switchgear and even the transmission tunnel are carried over from the latest iteration of the 1 Series. The automatic transmission is already used in several other BMW models and even this 2.0-liter engine first saw action in the Z4 sDrive28i.

The redesigned 2012 BMW 328i, with its 240-hp, twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission, gets a fuel-economy rating of 23/33 mpg city/highway, according to the EPA.

While that figure is respectable, it's lower that what was expected compared to the original EPA rating of 23/36 mpg, according to Autoblog.com.

The EPA revised the figures recently, knocking off 3 mpg from the 2012 BMW 328i highway figures. The city mileage number remains unchanged.

In a press release to Autoblog, BMW said it was "surprised" by the revisions. While the EPA is known for making small revisions, the 3 mpg downgrade is steep, and BMW says the figure is "abnormally low" in relation to its other vehicles like the recently discontinued 335d, which gets a 23/36 mpg rating with its V-6 diesel motor.

BMW can't have its 3 Series retested this year, so the EPA figure is sticking around. The 2012 BMW 3 Series went on sale in February with a starting price of $34,900, excluding an $895 destination fee.

Know More About New 2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan

BMW has introduced an all-new 3-Series sedan for 2012. The E90 3-Series coupe and convertible models, which just received the refresher in 2011, will continue as-is until moving into sixth-generation F30 form in 2013. The 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan features more room, less weight, and new engines.

The 328i and BMW 335i numerical nomenclature will be retained, but will make less sense with the new 328i engine. In addition, the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will join the roster and complete the line of hybrid sedans for BMW.

The new 2012 3 Series sedan, on sale since February, is the sixth generation 3 Series. Other models of the 3, such as the coupe and convertible, are not getting the makeover immediately. The four-door sedan available as the smaller-engine BMW 328i and bigger-engine BMW 335i has significant changes.

Here is some data about  2012 New BMW 3 Series Sedan :

Size
It's a little bigger, which opens up more space, mainly in back. More generous knee room there now. It remains far smaller than the 5 Series midsize (about a foot shorter, for instance) and is $10,000 to $12,000 less than the 5 at the entry level.

Looks
The extra size lets BMW drape the sheet metal a bit more gracefully, so it manages to look both sleeker and more muscular.

Drivetrain
The base model 328i now has a 2-liter turbocharged four cylinder in place of last year's 3-liter, non-turbo six. Same power rating — 240 horsepower — but the four is coarser in its delivery. It's especially unpleasant at low speed and in stop-and-go traffic.

It's a sweetheart under hard spurs on the open road, though.

The uplevel 335i sedan carries over the same turbocharged, 300-hp six-cylinder. It was not tested this time, but the same engine has been delightful in other BMWs Test Drive has sampled.

Both engines come with BMW's automatic start-stop feature. At long pauses, such as red lights, the engine will stop running to save fuel and cut pollution. It restarts instantly when the driver pushes on the clutch pedal on a manual-shift model or relaxes pressure on the brake pedal in an automatic. But there was lots of shaking and shimmying when it did its business in the 328i manual-transmission test car. Not refined enough for a BMW. You can cancel the start-stop feature via a button near the ignition switch.

BMW has an evil genius for options so the 3 gets pricey in a hurry. While the base 328i is a tempting $36,000, you must layer on several packages, none cheap, to get the blend of features you probably prefer. Figure $45,000 to $55,000 for a 3 you want.

Satisfying attributes of the new 3 include what you might expect on a BMW.

•Steering is nicely balanced, able to point the car straight ahead without lots of small corrections that some vehicles demand, and quite responsive when you turn the wheel. Makes it easy to accurately place the car in a tight corner, staying in your lane without panic.
•Brakes have a reassuring feel, neither spongy nor artificially boosted.
•Cornering ability is more than adequate, able to keep you on the road and out of the ditch when, oh, say, you hit an unfamiliar corner that's much tighter than expected while going pretty fast. The kind where, just for example, the back end begins to slide and the tires howl. Just for example.
•A "sport" setting on a console switch makes the throttle more responsive, among other tweaks. It was very useful in stop-lurch traffic because it eased the task of moving off smoothly while engaging the clutch.
•Seats are quite comfortable, though the back bench is low, forcing long-legged riders to jackknife their legs.
•Evolved iDrive infotainment control knob on the console seems now to let you do what you want pretty easily and without digging through daunting layers of menus and options.
•Trunk lid springs wide open when you hit the latch. Small thing, but greatly appreciated when your hands are full.

It's tough to point to a couple of attributes and say, "Yeah, that's justifies a $50,000 real-world price for a compact sedan." Rather, the new 3 Series is a car that gets under your skin. A car that, having driven it awhile, leaves you quite dissatisfied with a lot of other cars.
